Rare 1930s Chocolate Tin - Nancy Lane Chocolates Brooklyn New York
Delightfully delicious... (Times Union newspaper advertisement, Dec 1931)
{HISTORY}
Cheers to the season... to the sweets of the season.
Once operating on Grand Street, in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, New York, there was a famous favorite chocolate company called Nancy Lane. That sweet city confectionary tucked into an urban neighborhood was a festive part of the holiday gift-giving season for all New Yorkers during the 1930s. Christmas wouldn't have been Christmas without a box of Nancy Lane or two.
Along with fellow competitors like Whitman's, Page & Shaw, and Schmidt's, Nancy Lane tantalized sweet tooths of every age with her miniature chocolates and her pretty packaging. Priced between $0.29- $0.69 per pound, they were little luxuries meant to sweeten the hearts of chocolate lovers and gift-givers throughout the city.
This vintage tin dates between the 1920s and 1930s when Nancy Lane seemed to be operating at their peak of production. There is not a lot of information on the chocolate company itself, but weekly advertisements in 1930s newspapers suggest that Nancy Lane was an active party of the specialty food scene in Brooklyn at that time.
Originally containing one and a half pounds of miniature chocolates, this round flat tin features a two-toned green and teal container and a Victorian damsel on the lid. Fun for vintage tin collectors, as well as a completely useful and fully functional storage container for modern-day decorating and organizing, this piece of vintage Brooklyn history, will add lots of charm and character to your space.
