Fall is the season of the year for most persons to replenish or renew their supply of pipes... (from an October 1930 newspaper ad)

{HISTORY}

Founded by Charles & Herbert Larus in 1877, Larus & Brother Co. produced Edgeworth, a best-selling pipe tobacco during the first half of the 20th century. Located on Tobacco Row in Richmond, Virginia, Larus & Bro Co. was family-run for its entire 140-year run before it was sold to Rothman's of Canada in the late 1960s.

This tobacco tin, with its great fonts and blue and silver color palette, dates to the 1920s when a box of Edgeworth ran anywhere from $0.10 to $1.29 based on size and packaging material. While Edgeworth tins aren't that hard to find these days, this tin is a bit more difficult to find due to its petite size and the Edgeworth wrapping on the bottom front and back of the tin. Also, it includes the original paper labels on the exterior left and right side of the tin.

Known for its consistency in flavor and high quality, the ultimate downfall of Edgeworth and the Larus & Brother company was the rise in popularity of cigarettes in the 1960s. Pipe tobacco took a back seat to this more modern style of smoking.

With their dynamic presentation and convenient size, antique tobacco tins are wonderful storage solutions for modern kitchens. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we especially like to display them on bar carts where they mix and mingle with decanters and glassware and can hold matchsticks, toothpicks or cocktail accessories. A box of this size is also great for storing spare change, small candles, place cards and other mini table decor or kitchen items.
