 And far and wide, in a scarlet tide, the poppy's bonfire spread. Bayard Taylor

{HISTORY}

In the early to mid-20th century, there was a print shop in New York City known as M&B Inc. who sold mass produced fine art prints. This beautiful art deco style poppy print was part of their collection of offerings. It is not known if this was the frame intended for the poppy print by M&B originally but at some point the two pieces came  together to create an elegant vignette for attractive wall display. Over time, through a tumultuous storage condition, most likely due to very hot space like an attic, this artwork started to morph into another kind of visual story. The heat of its environment caused the paint on the reverse glass to crackle. In turn, the paper-made print also began breaking down.  These are the circumstances that led to what is now a most extraordinary piece of time-affected artwork.

For anyone who is a fan of shabby chic decor, this piece doesn't get any better. The red poppies are bright and bold. The reverse glass and green wood frame are contrasting shades of sage and mint. The flaked patterns of both the reverse glass and the print are so artistically and aesthetically executed you would almost think that this was hand-done not a result of natural decomposition.

Like the rose petals that fall in Beauty and the Beast, this framed art emotes a fading elegance that is hauntingly bittersweet... a nod to the passage of time and the weathered fragility of heirloom items.
