{ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATION}

From the 1920s era children's book, Rainbow Painting and Crayoning Book comes this beautifully illustrated coloring page designed by Florence Notter (1884-1960). 

A graduate of the Chicago Arts Institute, Florence was born in Independence, Kansas but was raised in Chicago where she studied art.  Described as quiet and petite with brown hair and French and German ancestry, Florence's books and illustrations were immensely popular, especially among the Chicago school system set. Selling hundreds of thousands of books during her career, Florence also taught art courses at the Chicago Arts Institute and wrote a newspaper column. 

In the 1920s, she illustrated the Rainbow Painting and Crayoning Book, which featured over 60 pages of colorful vignettes and black and white drawings on thick paper suitable to accept both crayon and paint applications.  

The subject of this illustration is the discovery of a rainbow by two children playing outdoors. The blank spot above the little boy's head is where creative artists fill in the colors of the rainbow exactly as they see fit. 

A quiet art project for your little one during the busy holiday season or a calming way to wind down from your own hectic day, this illustration reminds us to look for the rainbows in everyday life.
