{HISTORY}

What happens when you pair a successful salesman with a successful dishware manufacturer and then hire a team of talented employees to operate your company? You become Swinnertons, one of England's most prized 20th-century pottery companies.

Founded in 1906 by Bertram Swinnerton (the talented salesman) who partnered with Walter Lindley (the talented dishware maker), Swinnertons quickly rose to the top of their industry and became known for their excellent craftsmanship, moderate prices and beautiful designs. Especially beloved for their teapots, Swinnertons had appeal in the American market as well, as Bertram traveled back and forth between the US and England quite frequently. He even met his wife, Elizabeth in America and took her back to England to raise a family.

Tragedy struck when Bertram committed suicide in 1913, devasting and shocking both the pottery industry and his family. Walter dutifully carried on despite the missing hole his partner left and carried the company successfully all the way through to the 1950s. When Walter passed away in 1951, the pottery continued under other managing partners before being purchased by another firm in 1959. Eventually, the Swinnerton brand dissolved in the early 1970s. 

This pair of coupe-style bowls were made by Swinnertons in the 1940s and features their Ferry pattern. Similar to toile style designs, this gorgeous landscape pattern features lush trees, flowers, and foliage nestled in between a house, a windmill, and a steepled building. A family standing on the shores of the bank and a ferryman rowing a boat complete the tranquil scene. Available in other colors in addition to blue, this pattern was also produced in purple and then also a multi-colored version as well.

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition. There are no chips or cracks, and the glaze is very shiny on both bowls. One bowl contains slightly darker staining and both bowls contain gorgeous crazing marks. Please see photos.
