Vintage Mikasa Duplex Dinner Plate - Duet by Ben Seibel - 1970s Yellow Dinnerware
The study of sculpture has been one of the most important forces in my approach to design. Ben Seibel
{HISTORY}
Founded by California-born, George Aratani (1917-2013) in the 1950s, Mikasa began as an importer of Japanese dishware to America. Known for their fashionable designs, suburb quality, and convenient sales shops located within stores like Macy's and Bloomingdales, their dishware was an immediate success with mainstream mid-century America.
In the 1970s, designer Ben Seibel was commissioned by Mikasa to create a series of dishware that reflected the artist's unique style. Creating over a dozen different patterns for the company, he made this Duplex Duet dinner plate featured here between 1974-1975. Duplex was a fun shape because the sides are raised, like a tray which makes it functional in two ways... as a traditional dish for your dinner or a small serving tray for drinks or teatime.
