Green and red and gold... the holiday table never looked so festively vintage and delightfully bold...

{HISTORY}

If you want to cozy up to the Fall and Winter season, nothing warms the heart more than a little dish of vintage cheer. These two small midcentury berry bowls may have a shadowy past but they'll for sure have a clear future sitting pretty on your kitchen shelf.

There is a little bit of educated speculation going on here in the Vintage Kitchen when it comes to these two mysterious vintage berry bowls. Like their matching teacups here,  researching this pattern in order to identify maker and manufacture date brought not one single match, so we are left up to our best guesses based on details. Let's look...

The teacups ware stamped on the back with the U.S.A pottery mark and nothing else, so we might assume that they were a part of the California pottery scene of the 1960's, whose pieces were often unmarked except for the letters U.S.A. Their bright botanical imagery is most likely a depiction of the Cardinal flower, which is part of the Lobelia family and a wild flower that traditionally hails from the Midwest. As a bright bloomer towards the end of the summer when all the other garden flowers are tending to fade, the Cardinal flower pops up with its cherry red fringe-like petals and colors the landscape bright and bold once again. A very attractive source of nourishment for hummingbirds, Cardinal flowers were actually named for the bright red cloth worn by cardinals in the Roman Catholic church.

Originally these two were intended to for use as berry bowls, but in our modern day when we are not as specific about what bowls hold what contents, these two make delightful little dishes for holiday sweet treats like Christmas pudding, ice cream, oatmeal, fruit crumble, etc. They are also handy little helpers as olive and nut dishes for hors d'oeurves or cocktail hour. A petite dish for a petite dose of retro botanical charm.

We'll continue to research the particulars of this pattern, but for now, they are offered as-is with an extra dose of possibility.
