Vintage Sunshine Biscuits Tin Featuring the Flying Cloud and Red Jacket Clipper Ships
Once we agree on the future, the present will be much easier. A captain who does not know where he wants to sail, there is no wind on Earth that will bring him there. We have first to decide where we want to go, where we want to sail. Ami Ayalon
{HISTORY}
We love this quote just as much as we love this vintage baking tin. It's not only wise advice when it comes to making plans for your life but also for your decorating. Establish a plan or direction for what you want your space to look like and the mood you want to reflect and pieces will start automatically falling into place. Your style will begin to emerge with each new careful element you place. This clipper ship tin connects a few themes - nautical, free-spiritedness and classic antique Americana.
As a reproduction of the original hand-colored Currier & Ives lithograph, the ship featured on this tin is the Flying Cloud, a true marvel in its day in the 1850's. Known as one of the fastest sailing ships of its time, it boasted the ability to carry passengers from New York City to San Francisco in just a mere 89 days and 8 hours, whereas it took other ships of that time an average of 200 days. It also boasted a woman navigator in Eleanor Creesy, an extremely rare job for a woman in the 19th century.
Part of a series of limited edition gift tins commissioned by the Sunshine Biscuit Company, one of America's three largest biscuit companies of the 20th century, this tin premiered in 1981. The biscuit industry was pretty competitive throughout the 1900's so companies came up with unique packaging to set their products apart from rival businesses and to make their brand more memorable to consumers. Sunshine had been commissioning gift tins since 1933, releasing one new design almost every year forward. Almost all of the tins featured famous artworks and represented two functions - storage and serving, as each lid was removable and able to be used as a serving tray, making them both pretty and functional.

Both the bottom and underside of the lid are rust-free. Please see photos for detailed shots.
