{HISTORY}

Made in Japan by Meito China in 1935, this colorful set of vintage porcelain dinner plates features the Madrid pattern. Exquisite in color and composition, Meito produced porcelain dishes that were often compared to the quality and design aesthetic of Noritake. That comparison came naturally. The founder of Meito was a previous employee of Noritake, and assumed many of the techniques and artistic proclivities with which he had become familiar during his time at Noritake. 

The Madrid pattern features a veritable rainbow of complementary colors including gold, Tiffany blue, burgundy, blueberry, grape, lemon, spring green, almond, tangerine, cream,  lavender, and bright white. Floral swags, a gadroon-style inner circle, pedestal vases overflowing with fruit, and a chain of thyme leaves encircling the rim add dynamic style to each plate.  This eye-catching combination of pattern and color offers lots of tablescape design possibilities when it comes to mix-and-match style for year-round decorating,

Oftentimes, when we spot a vintage set of dishware, we can immediately imagine an occasion or a certain type of food that would look best when paired. In this case, a classic Thanksgiving dinner came to mind first as the colors captured here are so complimentary to the colors typically served at this holiday dinner. But there certainly is lots of year-round appeal here too from summer garden parties to merry New Year's Eve affairs and everything in between, these dinner plates know how to make the table look delightful each and every time.
