 Bath is beyond any question, the loveliest of English cities... Walter Ison, 1948

{HISTORY}

Published in 1948 by Walter Ison (1908-1997), The Georgian Buildings of Bath from 1700 to 1830 explores the city's commercial, religious and domestic buildings from all angles inside and out.

Walter was a well-known British architecture historian who published many books on the historic buildings of England. Many of his published works became go-to resources for students studying architecture at Cambridge and Oxford and are still referred to today by architecture enthusiasts around the globe.

Including floor plans, drawings, black and white photographs, and a beautifully detailed pull-out map of the city of Bath, Walter left no stone unturned when recording the stunning details that set this city apart from all others across England. Included here are fun facts from history, information about the architects and firms responsible for building these glorious works of art, street-by-street narratives that informed the ultimate layout of the city, and the key figures that made a lasting impact. From intricate details on plasterwork and chimneys to broader discussion on the layouts of the bathhouses, pleasure gardens, public buildings  and internal room setups, it's a really fascinating look at how a city grew up and ultimately captured a stylish era in architectural history.

Beautifully bound in handsome navy blue leather with a gilt spine, this is a rare edition of The Georgian Buildings of Bath. It was published by Faber & Faber in London in 1948 and printed in Great Britain by Shevnal Press. Possibly a special presentation edition or a gift volume, it features marbled endpapers, thick paper stock and a gilt foredge and spine.

Absolutely lovely for the architect in your life or for your own leather-bound collection, it is a lovely representation of the town frequented by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and centuries of admirers who have traveled Bath's historic streets. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we also have a fondness for Bath since it is rumored to be the birthplace of Sally Lunn and her marvelous cakes and breads.
