It's easy to teach an old wardrobe new tricks, to resurrect the skeletons in your closet and bring them up to date. Come on take those old knockabouts, and turn them into knockouts... (from the Intro)

{HISTORY}

This is what victory looked like in the closets of 1942! While World War II was still raging on the battlefields, sewers were hard at work on the homefront repurposing old clothes into new fashions. Thanks to the help of instructional sewing magazines like Make and Mend, old garments were repurposed in new and inventive ways. Not only was this a way to spare expense, but it was also a way to support the war effort by demonstrating a level of thrift and clever ingenuity.

With the help of this guide, men's office shirts became little girl's dresses. Scraps of fabric turned into dazzling hats. Adult winter coats became pants for the kiddos. A dress transformed itself into a pretty and practical pinafore. Crocheted yarn turned into jewelry.  This wartime edition of Make and Mend magazine published in 1942, illustrated an array of creative projects when it came to the home sewer determined to do her best in support of frugality and patriotism.

Published by the Spool Cotton Company, a longtime manufacturer of thread and yarn from the late 1800s to the 1950s,  this 50-page magazine jauntily illustrates the importance of recycling material when it came to supporting the war effort.  Supplying a wealth of creative ideas, with patterns and step-by-step instructions this is not only a dynamic glimpse into the inventive mindset of the war-time woman but also offers into trends in the fashion industry of the early 1940s.

A fun read for any home sewer or vintage fashion design enthusiast, this magazine will have you looking at your old clothes in all sorts of new and inspiring ways. Sustainable style and a recycling spirit never goes out of fashion!
