To locate historic buildings in Mississippi, to photograph them, to find relevant references and to write about the structures could be a life time project... Mary Wallace Crocker

{HISTORY}

It took writer and photographer, Mary Wallace Crocker four years to put this book of Mississippi's historic architecture together. From 1969-1973, Mary explored the state via county, city and township looking at the architecturally significant details of all manner of homes.  From humble cottages to grand estates, including both interiors and exteriors, she focused on houses and community buildings that were important for at least one of three factors... their architectural significance, their relationship to a historic event or the noteworthiness of a previous resident. Mary is quick to point out in the introduction that the old-timers are dying, and with them the intimate real-life stories that resonated from these  houses. It was her intention with this book to accurately preserve the attributes, artisans and occupants that made up the history and the landscape that is uniquely Mississippi.

One of the things that is most fascinating about this book is the way in which Mary captures the details of each property. Acting as a tour guide of sorts, she shares the interesting history, architecture and atmosphere of each property.  Fascinating for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts and anyone curious about family lives of the past, this book illustrates why and how telling the stories of Mississippi's old houses is so important to the conversation in our modern world.
