{HISTORY}

It's always fun to discover a vintage cookbook filled not only with creative recipes but also creative ways in which to cook them. In Katharine Robinson's 1973 Gourmet in the Galley, she shares over 1000 recipes and 200 suggested menus for prepping, cooking and serving meals on a boat.

As an avid sailor, Katharine knew first-hand the challenges of making interesting meals aboard a boat. Limited space, inappropriate cooking utensils, primitive cooking equipment and lack of adequate storage and refrigeration all meant that eating aboard and eating well aboard were two different issues entirely. Anxious to move past typical fare... hot dogs, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, soggy crackers and raw vegetable platters, Katharine developed a whole array of recipes that suited the surroundings, the weather, and the time of day in which they were served.

Creatively utilizing some staple gourmet canned foods, frozen (at home) vegetables, a few prepared ahead ingredients, wine and assorted spirits for flavor, and as many fresh foods as the boat could hold, Katharine was able to create a variety of meals that served from two to fifteen people.   No one wants to eat a cold, hard carrot on a cold, windy, overcast day on the water. Instead how about a  hot boat-made blackberry cobblerette served in a coffee mug?  That's the kind of food and atmosphere Katharine was interested in preparing for her family and friends.

Recipes run the gamut from breakfast to dinner including hors d'oeuvres and desserts and range from simple snacks and meals on board for one to four as well as party food for up to 15 people during rafting up parties.
