...and so begins the story of this detailed history of domestic furniture in New England's Colonial America.  Written by a collector (Irving Whithead Lyon) for other collectors, it is packed with information on the design, style, execution, and composition of chests, chairs cupboards, desks, tables, clocks and chests of drawers that would have typically been seen in 17th and 18th-century homes in New England. Complete with illustrations, and beautifully bound in green coverboards with gold detailing, this book is a treasure for antique furniture enthusiasts. 

Irving wrote this book so that he could understand the history of his own collection of antique furniture and in doing so, he learned a wealth of ancillary information about its makers, their influences and the environments in which this type of furniture became useful. 

Published in 1925, this is the third edition of which only 525 copies were printed. As an ex-library volume, this book sat for years in the non-circulating reference section of a Connecticut library. This limited exposure has kept the book in great shape for close to 100 years. 

Large in size, it contains 285 pages complete with a detailed index and weighs close to 5 lbs. A lovely volume for a rare book lover, furniture specialist, designer, antique collector or anyone in love with this colonial time period in American history.

{CONDITION}

In marvelous vintage condition especially considering its 97 years of age. Because this is an ex-library book, there is some very light and very minor scratching on the front and back coverboards. There are a few areas in the book which contain library marks or stamps including a nameplate on the front inside cover. The spine is tight and all pages are intact. There is a slight wrinkle to the pages in the chair chapter (please see photos) and the back cover is just beginning to pull away from the binding ever so slightly. Please see photos.
