And so begins the story of Buckeye Cookery and Practical Housekeeping. Originally published in 1877, this book was part friend, part teacher, part sage for thousands of women looking for guidance on all matters relating to domestic housekeeping and cooking during the late 1870s. As one of few books found in the homes of midwesterners, it was not only a trusted resource but also filled the need for both entertainment and educational purposes. 

Including recipes, housecleaning advice, and tips on personal hygiene and health, as well as recommendations for creating a pretty and pleasant home environment, Buckeye Cookery is a fascinating look into matters of importance for the 19th-century woman.  Historically valuable for numerous reasons, this book is an important component to the canon of influential antique cookbooks because it not only offers insight into the day-to-day lives of women during the late 1800s, but also provides an archive of historic recipes that fed Americans well into the 20th century. 

Reprinted in 1970, from the original text, this edition is the second printing of the latter version published in 1971. Printed from a facsimile copy,  it charmingly retains the original 1887 layout and fonts.

In lovely vintage condition. There a few random splatter marks on a couple of pages, but overall, this book is very clean and bright. The spine is tight and all pages are intact. A small sticker bearing the name and address of a previous owner can be seen on both the inside front cover and the inside back cover.
