Named after the mythical people of old England, legend states that Brownies were fairy-like do-gooders who came into houses at night to help while families were asleep...

{HISTORY}

An international good-will youth organization, the Girls Scouts of America was started by Juliette Gordon Low in 1911. Brownies are the youngest members of the Girl Scout troop, typically aged 7-9, and the gateway to becoming a full-fledged girl scout later on. The mission of Girl Scouts since its inception was to provide a social club for girls and young women that helped build confidence, courage, and creativity while teaching them to be thoughtful citizens and good stewards of the environment.

This Brownie handbook was published in 1951 and contains all the information and exercises that a new Brownie would need to know and learn during her time before she moves on to the next stage of being an intermediate girl scout. Delightfully illustrated throughout by Ruth Wood, this 95-page handbook takes readers through the history of the Girl Scouts as well as the philosophy of the organization, how that affects individuals as well as the group and activities that all brownies will partake in during their meetings.

A lovely nostalgic look at a midcentury life, the Brownie Scout Handbook is a timeless little slice of Americana. Whether you were a Brownie yourself or always wanted to be one, this book will make you feel like you are part of the troop, part of the world and crusader for human goodness regardless of your age or membership status.
