Whatever field you have chosen for your career, charm training will give you the added advantages of greater self-confidence, amplified beauty and personality plus...which can pave the way for smoother human relations by teaching the techniques for  getting along with others. (from the Introduction)

{HISTORY}

If you ever wanted an inside peek into the mind, heart, and attitude of a 1960's woman, then this is the book for you! An utterly fascinating book about how to improve yourself through exercises in charm, beauty, and poise, this very rare treasure was like having a fairy godmother right at your fingertips. Covering everything from makeup application to social etiquette, personality development to voice improvement, wardrobe planning to graceful mannerism instruction, this 356-page guidebook is both timeless in information and insightful in presentation of what the ideal midcentury woman looked like.

Confident, well-groomed, friendly, approachable, and interesting women that blend depth and charisma with femininity and individuality are the goals to be reached within these pages. Intended as a charm school coursebook and reference guide for cosmetology students getting ready to enter the workforce, the information presented here was meant to give women the strongest leg up in their professional lives, while not sacrificing their own female attributes, unique viewpoints, and acquired skill sets.

In the 1960s as well as today, beauty industry professionals and hairstylists wear many hats. They are skilled workers but also confidants to their customers, salesmen for their services, entrepreneurs for their business, and creative marketing reps for themselves. The author, Ruth Tolman, understands that successful women were confident women and that there was absolutely no shame in trying to become the best version of yourself.

In Beautician's Guide to Beauty Charm Poise, published in 1964, she dives into educating women on the importance of physical appearance for confident presentation while also discussing the psychology behind the importance of perception and acceptance of life's various social situations.  This is not a primer geared towards women who are trying to attract men, but instead a primer geared towards women who are trying to attract their best selves. It's about gracious attitudes, self-care, and effective communication. It's about projecting your true personality, promoting individual character, and attracting what you seek. It's about fashion advice and beauty tips and style tricks that will make you look good and feel good. Really we could write for days about this incredible book, but we will never do it enough justice!  It is one of the most interesting self-care books we have ever come across - a true time capsule of information that is both retro and very very modern all at the same time.

{WHY IT IS ESPECIALLY MARVELOUS}

You may be wondering why a vintage beauty book has found its way into the Vintage Kitchen. While this book does focus on fashion and makeup, it also offers a healthy dose of eating etiquette, table manners, and advice for social situations and conversation in celebratory settings like dinner and cocktail parties. Plus, confidence and presentation are as equally important in the realm of the kitchen as they are anywhere else. Whether you are presenting a cake you just made or walking down the street in a coat you just bought, you are using the same skill set to promote your style and your abilities to others. This book will show you how to feel great about the varied aspects and accomplishments in your life.
