{HISTORY}

Can a plate represent not only 100 years' worth of dinner time stories but also one of a famous family too? You bet! Made in England, between 1910-1936 by John Maddock & Sons, this antique dinner plate features the soft pine green Hamilton pattern.  First designed in the late 1890s, JM & S made several versions of the Hamilton pattern - two in green and one in blue. The green patterns were distinguishable by a lacy medallion center in one version and a plain center in another. 

This plate features the plain version which gives it a much more classic, older appearance than its 1910 date of manufacture. But flip it over and you'll see two letters pressed into the clay - GV - that give this dish a little bit of royal flair. GV stands for the reign of King George V and indicates the decades in which this plate was made.

It is unclear as to what the connection was between King George and the dishware industry, so we are not exactly sure why King George's initials would have been included, but we do have some plausible ideas. This stamp could have been an identification mark intended for pieces that were headed out of the country for export,  or it could have been a patriotic mark signifying the reign of an admired King who valued family, strong morals, a quiet life, and the role of mediation over one-sided decision making when it came to government, or it could have been some sort organizational mark within the pottery designating not only the years in which it was made, but also its intended destination. Either way, it is a fun piece of history hidden on the backside of a plate.

In lovely aged condition, this antique plate has lots of character. Pretty for food photography, creative storytelling, and stylish display, its authentic appearance will add a stunning bit of history to your space.

{CONDITION}

In lovely aged condition. This plate carries the appearance of a long life lived over the course of a century. There is crazing throughout and light staining in the center of the plate. There are three small very old chips along the edge near the rim - mostly caused by plate hangers. The backside has one small chip near the rim. Please see photos.
