{HISTORY}

A celebration of color and festivity, this antique platter contains an array of pretty florals and shapes. Made by Taylor Smith Taylor in July of 1921. its pattern name is unknown but it was shared by other potteries too. Also known in England as the Minton Rose pattern made by Minton Porcelain and the Arundale pattern made by Johnson Brothers, this piece was made by Taylor Smith Taylor in West Virginia, possibly in an effort to recreate the same admired style of its British counterparts.

With a bone-colored background and weathered crazing marks, this platter does indeed look all of its 102 years. Around here, we love to see platters in this aged state as they are examples of a well-loved piece of tableware that has seen party after party, meal after meal, kitchen after kitchen for over a century.

Made during the Roaring 20s, in that golden sliver of time that exuded gaiety and frivolity between the WWI and the Great Depression years, we like to think that this platter, given its cheerful style, was the guest of honor at many exciting meals.

During the decade in which this platter was made, Taylor Smith Taylor was producing dinnerware for both the domestic retail market and also the hotel and restaurant industry as well. Being a very hard TST pattern to find now, this platter could have been made for either serving environment giving it a sense of mystery as to where it spent time in the past.  Stamped with the Iona jug mark on back, which was in use only during the 1920s and early 1930s, this platter now serves as a long-surviving relic that offers a beautiful glimpse into 1920s aesthetics.
