... mothers have clasped their hands across the many miles with other mothers in a common effort to help each other by submitting recipes, household hints, suggestions in cooking and housekeeping and words of encouragement in general... Aunt Becky

{HISTORY}

The Amish kitchen is one of simplicity, practicality and an inherent desire not to waste anything. Based around seasonality and the crops they harvest, animals they tend, and fruits and vegetables they grow in their gardens,  Amish recipes are known for their wholesome, nutritional foods that fuel the body for daily work.

Amish Cooking was first published in 1977 and quickly became a popular cookbook both within and outside the Amish community. Featuring recipes collected from Amish settlements across the US, this cookbook in particular hails from Shipshewana, Indiana where the third largest Amish community in the US is located.

Made up of Old Order favorites, these recipes have been passed down through generations of women who were in charge of feeding big families every day, three meals a day.  Especially admired are the baking sections for cakes, pies and yeast breads as well as the section on jams, jellies and preserves - foods often offered for sale to visitors of the settlement communities.

Also included are glimpses into Amish life with sections on housekeeping, cleaning, leftovers,  household hints, childcare, sewing and homemade remedies.
