There was something rather blousy about roses in full bloom, something shallow and raucous, like a woman with untidy hair.  Daphne de Maurier

{HISTORY}

Oh the combination of English roses and Royal Albert, it is a cottage lover's dream! Debuting in 1939, Royal Albert's Old English Rose pattern line was a beauty to behold. With its large, brightly colored petals and brushed gold rim, it brought a rowdy sense of style to the table along with a very modern aesthetic. Still emoting such qualities,  to our modern-day eyes this dishware pattern retains quite a youthful personality despite its eighty-year-old life.

In production from the late 1930s to the mid-1970s, Old English Rose was a popular pattern for collectors. Containing a few different style variations, some pieces in this pattern contained butterfly handles, dramatic black backgrounds, and heavily applied gold accents. This open sugar bowl and creamer set was part of the collection made between 1945 and 1950 that features a lightly brushed gold rim, delicate gold stripes on the pedestal style base as well as decorative handles.

For all the variation that made up this pattern the one thing that remained consistent throughout was the iconic oversized roses in shades of pink and magenta. Containing additional shades of raspberry, lime green, spring green, grey, and gold, this pattern looks lovely with a variety of bright white dishes or accent pieces in shades of purple, lavender and green.
