As a lover of all things library, he sits atop two of his most favorite books. One is called Knowledge - that ever-present word that holds all sorts of magical powers, and the other is a title of your guessing.

Could be a classic like Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men? Or Hemingway's midcentury masterpiece, The Old Man & The Sea? Or something closer to his species perhaps, like Farley Mowat's Owls in the Family? All three books were bestsellers in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and Earnest being the reader that he is, has kept up with all the popular books of his generation.

Starting in the mid-1950s and stretching all the way through the 1960s, America was in love with owls. And by saying in love, we really mean IN LOVE. Collectors could find them everywhere. In wall art, kitchen decor, calendars, greeting cards. They were on desks and mantles and library shelves. In kids’ rooms, in gardens, on travel souvenirs, on barware. They came in glass, brass, chalkware, ceramics, pottery, paper, and metal. They were owl candleholders, ash trays, incense lighters, lamps, clocks, jewelry, toys, storage boxes, stationary, dishes, fashion accessories, and figurines of all shapes and sizes. It makes sense that they also would have been beloved figures for bookends too. The wise old owl is as complimentary to learning and good books as paper is to pen.

And so here he is, still Earnest, a 70-year-old time traveler, but still very much in love with literature, and still very much ready to add a little dose of delight to your day.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

Ceramic

Colors include light grey, cream, vermilion, black, and gold

Contains original maker's sticker on back and paper lining on bottom

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition, this bookend contains no chips or cracks. The glaze is shiny and bright. There is some chipping to the cold paint added to the books, which is typical for this type of fragile, post-glaze paint application and adds a lovely aged aesthetic to the overall composition. To prevent further chipping in this area, we recommend light dusting with a dry cloth.

{SIZE}

Measures 6" inches (height) x 3.5" inches (length) x 2.5” inches (depth) and weighs 10 oz.

{DONATION SUPPORTED}

This heirloom gives back! 20% of the proceeds of this bookend will be donated to rare.org - an international non-profit committed to protecting, promoting, and preserving global foodways, communities, and the environment through self-sustainability and conservation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2133/8945/files/vintage-1960s-napco-giftcraft-owl-bookend.png?v=1791293634
