Colorful, with plumage in practically every shade of the rainbow, they were part of the painterly landscapes of pasturelands and fields long before cattle took over and collectors thinned their crowd.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUpon discovery, British ornithologist John Gould (1804-1881) named these colorful birds Platycercus pulcherrimus, the Beautiful Parakeet aka the Beautiful Parrot. Enchanted not only with them but with the hundreds of other native birds, British husband and wife naturalist team, John \u0026amp; Elizabeth Gould traveled throughout the Australian continent in the late 1830s recording the native flyers that called the Land Down Under home. In 1840, they began publishing their findings in what would become one of the most important ornithological guides ever published in the Eastern Hemisphere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJohn Gould, as the scientific expert, and Elizabeth Gould (1804-1841) as the artist and illustrator, studied and catalogued Australian avian communities of the mid-19th century in order to create a record of the flora and fauna that would become the framework of ornithology in Australia.  Rising to international fame and acclaim after publishing the first comprehensive record of Australian birds, their book, published in installments beginning in 1840, and simply titled \u003ci\u003eBirds of Australia,\u003c\/i\u003e recorded over 600 different species. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTragically, Elizabeth died from an infection following childbirth in 1841 but the project continued even through John's devastation, with other artists that took the helm and followed in Elizabeth's careful style and true- to-life renditions.  For eight years, across seven books, \u003ci\u003eBirds of Australia\u003c\/i\u003e unfolded for public viewing. For many around the globe this was the first foray into not only seeing what Australian birds looked like, but also learning about their characters and their habitats.  The Paradise Parrot portrait was published in 1845.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn publishing a portrait showcasing the rare beauty of the Parrot birds, a cruel fate awaited as more and more people learned about them.  Many coveted the real bird's colorful plumage and exotic beauty. Bird breeders, poachers, domestic animals out hunting, imported agricultural herds, loss of habitat, and years long-drought contributed to the ultimate downfall of the species. By 1922, the Paradise Parrot was extinct.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the few remaining records of this specie's  presence is John Gould's Birds  of Australia. In the 1960s, I New York. fine art retailer Sidney Z.
