Built for speed, this mid-19th century clipper was a record-breaking merchant ship designed by noted Canadian-American shipbuilder, Donald McKay (1810-1880) that sailed the world hauling valuable cargo. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom a painting by American artist and illustrator John O'Hara Cosgrave II (1908-1968), this vintage mid-20th century edition by Penn Prints New York captures Sovereign in all her glory cutting through the seas with exhilarating energy and vitality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLaunched from Boston Harbor in 1852, she was the largest merchant ship in the world. Voyages in her first year took her to Liverpool, England in under 14 days, from New York to San Francisco in 103 days, to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and back to New York in 82 days. Impressive on all fronts, she could hold a tremendous amount of cargo and keep up with a fast-paced schedule making her a valuable transportation vessel in the trading industry. In 1854, she would be deemed the fastest sailing ship in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSovereign of the Seas’ final voyage came just seven years after she was built, when she  ran aground in the Strait of Malacca near the Malay Peninsula. At the time, she was hauling over 5,000 bales of cotton from Bombay to Hong Kong. All the crew onboard were saved, but only part of the cargo. Sadly, damage to the ship was too great to save her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStill remaining ne of the most well-known clipper ships in the world and a point of pride in Donald McKay's extensive roster of ships built, Sovereign of the Seas floats on in John O'Hara Cosgrave's portrait. Featuring a gorgeous arrangement of colors, John was particularly noted for detailing all the rigging lines of sailing vessels in his maritime art, something many other artists rarely captured to such an extent. Trained in California and Paris, John was a prolific illustrator throughout his career and was also the author of several children's books on sailing vessels.
