They called it needle painting, which is exactly how it sounds... creating layers of color with thread. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFeaturing reproductions of famous paintings, illustrations, and classic art, Hiawatha's selected imagery was printed on high quality cotton in full color with the intention that the sewer would enhance the scene with bits of embroidery work  to create a two-dimensional vignette.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhich areas to embroider in the scene, and in what colors, was up to each individual sewer's choice and creativity, making each Hiawatha Picture unique unto itself. Sold as complete kits including cloth with printed image, glass, frame and instructions, once completed, embroiderers had ready to hang piece of art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis framed Hiawatha Embroidery Picture features a mid-18th century illustration from Godey's fashion plates as they appeared in Godey's Lady's Book. Published each month between the 1830s and 1870s, Godey's was a very popular women's magazine that featured poetry, articles, short stories, and fashion plates. As the voice of women in pre-Civil War America, the magazine championed women's causes and supported women's rights especially when it came to education.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eColor illustrations and fashion plates were expensive for the magazine to produce but they were one of the most beloved aspects of Godey's Lady's Book, and it was how women kept up with the fashion trends of the mid-19th century. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Hiawatha Godey's illustration features an Americanized version of the latest Paris fashion in 1849. Colorful dresses, lace sleeves, and hats adorned with ribbons that matched, these two fashion models are strolling through a pastoral setting complete with a flower garden, a castle or large estate, and sculptural trees and bushes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn this setting, the hobby embroiderer chose to the highlight the dresses and the flowers, both at ground level and also the ones in hand and hat. Beautifully executed on all fronts, there is not a stitch out of place in this setting, suggesting a high level of skill and care undertaken by the embroiderer. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHiawatha kits came in a wide range of scenes from animals to floral still to fashion prints like this one. A bit of rarity in color palette, this same setting of two women in the garden was also printed in other colors when it came to women's dresses, but this blue and green version is harder to find.
