{HISTORY}

In 1956, this was the recommended way to picnic!

This vintage 1956 vinyl record features the rousing band music of the Boston Pops as led by beloved conductor Arthur Fiedler (1894-1979). Arthur who came from musical parents, was a dynamo when it came to the Boston musical scene. Most known for his work with the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony, Arthur was musically inspired by his teenage years living in Austria and Germany where he studied with the Royal Academy of Music. Returning back to his hometown of Boston, in his early 20's, he held the position of conductor for the Boston Pops for 50 years - an unusual achievement of duration, and became an iconic fixture in the classical music world of the 20th century. He was loved so much we included a photo of here too for context!

He was also a great fan of hosting outdoor performances, so it is fitting that he has a picnic record specifically designed for outdoor enjoymenent. A mix of calm orchestra music and energetic band selections designed to get your toes tapping, this is an interesting mix of choices for an outdoor picnic playlist.

Equally charming is the record's cover art -  a colorful scene set by midcentury photographer Mitchell Bliss. We were hoping to find out more info about this midcentury photographer - but it appears Mitchell and his work are a tad mysterious.  Hopefully we can uncover some details about his work soon.
