{HISTORY}

Sometimes in your daily cook space, it helps to have little symbols of encouragement as you embark on your culinary adventures. You'll find such a symbol in this petite vintage platter made by Salem China in Ohio in the 1940's. It is designed in the pottery's Victory shape in the very rare, hard to find Dominion pattern which features a big bouquet of colorful garden flowers and a striated rim.

Made only for six years between 1944-1950, this pattern debuted during the later half of World War II, when times were trying and uncertain. Most likely an effort to provide some encouragement for women on the home front who were anxiously awaiting their soldiers return, subtle signs like a simple piece of dishware were comforting reminders of patriotism, positivity and promise for a brighter future. In the language of flowers we have quite a conversation going on here. The red poppies symbolize peace, the blue cornflowers symbolize friendship, the wheat stalks symbolize life and the daisies symbolize innocence.  Combine them altogether in a blousy bouquet like this and you have a beautiful message that emotes empathy and understanding . A true fixture of optimism in the war-time kitchen.

Today, this platter is just as inspiring. Cooking is all about uniting people and ideas and platters in all shapes and form do the best job of bringing people together to share culinary delights, stories and ideas. Cheers to victories both then and now, however small or large they might be!
