{HISTORY}

Worthy of a grand travel adventure, this nautical inspired vegetable dish featuring a pattern called Commodore, was made by the Salem China Company of Salem, Ohio in the 1940's. Festooned with gold swags, bows, filigree and two handles, this vegetable dish has some definite stories to tell. In addition to its elegant pattern, age and use have left their marks on this dish in the forms of delicate crazing and staining, which is a true delight for the imagination. The word commodore is synonymous with other sea-life professions like captain, naval officer and yacht club owner, so we like to think that this dish spent time amidst a sailor's collection perhaps at Annapolis or Boston or Savannah.

Along the way, somewhere between the 1940's and now it became separated from its original lid, which now opens up a whole host of uses for this wayward wanderer. With its ivory shade and shiny gold, it would be a gorgeous container for succulent plants, a pretty holder for dinner rolls or fruit, a table centerpiece container for garden clippings or a display piece for your kitchen counters or cupboard.

{CONDITION}

This dish contains both crazing and staining due to age. There is one hairline crack that measures 1.5" inches in length and one tiny chip on the rim that measures 1/8th of an inch in length. Neither of these marks affect the overall structural integrity of the dish. Gold detailing on the handles bears rub marks at points of contact where the dish was carried by hand. Please see photos.
