{HISTORY}

This vintage quilt piece is a fascinating little marvel. It contains a great collection of colors and interesting fabrics. Parts of it were sewn by machine, parts by hand. It contains tight stitches in some squares and some loose fabric edges in others. Some rows are perfectly straight and other rows are a little off course. It is an interesting size and a somewhat unbalanced shape. It is rustic and primitive and beautiful. Best of all, it was made by someone, a labor of love perhaps, a long time ago.

The fabrics used in this piece all date to about the 1930's. Most likely they were feed sack material cut into squares and repurposed into this checkerboard pattern swatch of cloth. Originally this might have been intended as a small table cloth cover, the beginnings of a pillow or even a small blanket mat for a baby. Now it would look absolutely splendid as the centerpiece on a big wood farm table, maybe with a jug of flowers on top or a few Fall pumpkins. It also serves as a great hot pad table protector for bigger casserole dishes or platters just out of the oven.

{CONDITION}

In very clean shape, this cloth bears no staining except for one 3/4" inch spot on one corner. All the colors are bright and vibrant. Some of the edges in some squares are frayed or have come free of their stitching. Please see photos. If you love authenticity, you'll leave this cloth just as it is with all of its aged charm and character. But if you are a sewer, perhaps you'd like to tidy up and secure some of those loose squares.
