uriarte-talavera-mexican-pottery-two-handled-dish
Vintage Ysauro Uriarte Talavera Mexican Pottery Two Handled Dish

{HISTORY}

With its roots dating back to 1824, this two-handled, hand-painted pottery dish was made by Mexico's oldest pottery, Ysuaro Uriarte Talavara.

First founded in 1824, Uriarte Talavara, located in the historic city of Puebla, is Mexico's premier pottery known for its exceptional craftsmanship and artistic designs inspired by traditional Spanish, Colombian, Italian, Chinese and Mexican heritage art. Utilizing the same technique created in New Spain in the 16th century, Uriarte Talavera continues centuries of earthenware manufacturing that has long blended an age-old art form with traditional Mexican culture.

This dish, possibly a mini tureen or a planter, features a pattern design that possibly dates back to the 1920s and 1930s. A mix of flowers, dots, stripes, and zig zags, it boasts a beautiful color palette of sea green, marigold, mustard yellow, and deep cobalt blue against a creamy gray clay background. Larger than a sugar bowl, smaller than a tureen, originally this dish might have once come with a removable lid. Nowadays, it's a gorgeous mini vessel with all sorts of purposes from table centerpiece designs to use as a mini fruit bowl for lemons, limes, garlic, or small onions or a smal gardenscape for kitchen herbs, bulbs and flowers.

A one-of-a-kind art piece in all ways, it's tricky to pinpoint an exact manufacture date of this little beauty, since there aren't any others of this size and shape just like it. The bottom contains the Yasauro Uriarte mark and the address of the pottery, but we couldn't locate any other details reagrding its specific manufacturing timeline. That makes it a bit of a mystery, if you will, of the most engaging sort from a maker long-known for captivating collectors.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

Unique design and size

Hand-painted

Contains maker's mark on bottom

{CONDITION}

In beautiful vintage condition, this dish contains no chips, cracks, or staining.
