It took them eleven months to complete the guide, and in that timeframe they had a very important mission to accomplish - to make insects seem appealing and wondrous by  dispelling notions that they were pesky or insignificant. To highlight the key roles they played in the environment, Ralph created a section under each insect's description titled \"Importance\" which described how they were of help to specific types of plants, flowers, animals and other insects. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRalph Brownlee Swain (1913-1953) was an American entomologist who worked with the United States government conducting lab and field work around North America and also served as a specialist to the US Embassy in Nicaragua. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the first projects that Ralph and SuZan worked on together, \u003cem\u003eThe Insect Guide\u003c\/em\u003e was also the first bug-related field guide geared towards novice nature enthusiasts both in content and imagery.
