{HISTORY}

Published in 1975, Recipes From America's Restored Villages is a fascinating look at the culinary menus appetites and kitchen arrangements of over 40 historic villages across the country. Written by editor, writer and nutritionist, Jean Anderson, this cookbook not only shares traditional, authentic recipes made by our our country's early ancestors, but she also details the interesting history of each village featured. Determined not to make this a boring, nor inaccurate history book, she sets out to dispel popular myths about each settlement by painting a more human story that is highly relateable.

The recipes in this cookbook are not what we would consider "Early American" fare but instead actual recipes of the pioneers who settled the country and lived off of garden-grown food, simple ingredients and local wildlife. Although ingredients have been slightly modified for reproduction in the modern kitchen, Jean wanted to stay as close to the authentic recipes as possible so most recipes contain just a handful of commonly found ingredients. As for preparation and cooking techniques - all recipes have been adjusted to accommodate modern ovens and stove tops - so there's no hearth cooking or open-fire treatments. Also peppered throughout are fun facts, legends, anecdotes and highlights sourced from historic cookbooks, gardening manuals and historical information found at each restored village.

Because this cookbook details historic places across the U.S., it is also interesting to see how different regions approached food based on their geographical location and their cultural influences from around the world. A wonderful book for lovers of history, old houses, cooking and travel, this unique book contains so many fascinating stories it's a feast for both your brain and your belly.
