large-vintage-porcelain-platter-by-r-m-co-czechoslovakia
Large Vintage Porcelain Platter by R & M Co Czechoslovakia

{HISTORY}

It's not often that we see such a large, heavy porcelain platter come through the shop. This one measures 17.25" inches in length and weighs a hefty 4 lbs.

Made by R & M Co in Czechoslovakia, it features a blueberry and gold trim accented with pink roses and green swirls against a bright white porcelain background.

Stamped on the back with a globe-style mark, after much research, we couldn't find any information connecting R & M Co with Czechoslovakia and porcelain manufacturing, so this maker is a bit of a mystery. Based on the style of the pattern and the black detailing around the pink roses, we suspect this platter was made in the 1920s or 1930s, back when black was a popular color on dishware.

This color arrangement of blueberry, mustard, spring green, black, plum pink, and pale yellow is an especially pretty combination for serving foods hot off the grill or oven-roasted. Pot roast, filet mignon, baked chicken, pork chops smothered with apple chutney, grilled pineapple, wine-soaked brisket, tandoori chicken... those are just a few ideas of foods in the brown and tan color palette that would look so complementary here on this platter. Pretty foods in collaboration with pretty presentation make meal time all the more festive and inviting. The fun thing about this platter is that it is ideally suited and (and sized!) to feed such a gathering.

Given its bountiful shape, it's also a pretty dish for wall display if you are looking for a big platter to fill a big space. The shiny glaze of the porcelain is reflective, so this charmer has the added benefit of bringing a bit of additional light to any area of your kitchen that could use a little brightening.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

Hefty weight and large size

Stamped on back with maker's mark

Hard-to-find-pattern from hard-to-find manufacturer

{CONDITION}

In lovely vintage condition, this platter contains no chips, cracks, or staining. There are a few black dots randomly scattered on the front of the dish, which are remnants of natural minerals found in porcelain clay. Two lines can also be found on the shoulder area of the platter on the front. One line is an errant piece of black transferware from the floral design and the other line is a rust-colored mark which appears to be under the glaze. The gold stripe around the rim is wearing ever so slightly in some spots.
