That makes it an ideal holder for long-stemmed flower garden cuttings, twig gathering, linen storage, laundry hamper needs, and decorative display.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnique in shape, it's difficult to determine the exact age of this basket due to its handmade construction and unusual form, but what it lacks in specific origin story detailing it more than makes up for in its time-worn character and rustic country house aesthetic. We did hours upon hours of research to try and pinpoint where and who made this marvel, but came up with more possibilities than accurate answers. It could have been made in Mexico in the 1940s or made in New England before the turn of the century. It could have been used as a large sewing basket, a garden helper, a picnic hamper, or a marketing basket. It might have once held onto bolts of fabric or rolls of wrapping paper, displayed baguettes at the bakery, or corralled bundles of kindling to light a warm and cozy fire.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhatever the situation, a basket of this substantial size and shape offers instant utility to daily routine as well as beauty to a space. There are a few insignificant weathered flaws that hint at age and use, all of which are visible in the photographs. Those include a small pencil-point-sized hole in one band in the split oak section, some light staining in some areas, and a frayed piece of split oak in one section which is not broken just ragged.
