What Irma Rombauer started in 1931, when she published the first version of \u003cem\u003eJoy of Cooking\u003c\/em\u003e, went on to become the most beloved cookbook of all time, a nostalgic favorite that has sold millions of copies throughout its lifetime.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver the course of 90 years, there have been eight revisions of her 800-page cooking masterpiece and many, many reprints. This is the 1962 edition, published in the same month that Irma died. It is co-authored by her daughter Marion and revised by Marion and her husband, John. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRetaining all of Irma's writing, it was also enhanced by Marion and John who included new fish dishes and recipes for new favorite foods like Bolognaise sauce. While the cookbook continued to bring joy to the kitchen, there were publishing troubles surrounding this particular edition. It was printed without Marion's signed contract agreement and therefore the first pass-through was published before Marion gave final approval. That resulted in several errors that Marion fretted over. Several reprints of this edition were needed to set Marion and Irma's words right. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChanges from previous \u003cem\u003eJoy\u003c\/em\u003e editions welcomed new chapters in this version written by Marion including The Foods We Heat and Know Your Ingredients, along with a more industrious wild game section that included recipes for bear, squirrel and opossum but does not yet include recipes for raccoon, beaver, woodchuck and peccary which would be included in the 1963 edition. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRegardless of publishing problems, \u003cem\u003eJoy\u003c\/em\u003e still brought joy. It's been a staple in the kitchen for nearly a century in all its editions, thanks to Irma and Marion's thoughtful work and dedicated care. The clean cover boards are claen bright with just a little bit of fraying at the top and bottom edge. The spine is tight and all pages are intact. The last page of the index is coming a way from the spine just a bit but is no danger of coming unattached. The page markers have darkened over time at the ends and are frayed slightly. A previous owners name is written in pen on the front endpaper.
