antique-henry-alcock-co-kenilworth-square-plate-with-handles-circa-1883
Antique Henry Alcock & Co Kenilworth Square Plate with Handles circa 1886

{HISTORY}

Made by Henry Alcock & Co in Cobridge, England in 1886, this antique square plate features the Kenilworth pattern - a beautiful brown floral representing the 19th century Aesthetic movement.

Prized for its artistic, nature-inspired themes, the Aesthetic Movement defined a break in the industrial influence of Victorian England. Affecting all areas of life, from classical art to furniture, the sole purpose of the movement was to create beauty in any form, shape, subject, and color for the sheer sake of expressing artistic creativity. Dishware during this movement featured bold patterns, off-center layouts, and dynamic designs.

In the true spirit of the time, this plate, with its big blossomed branches, stylized portrait frames, and decorated handles, offers a lot to admire. Let's look...

The inset circular fan-shaped image features a portrait of two birds, perhaps of the crane family. Behind them is a different image of a pastoral landscape setting complete with mountains, trees, and a lake. Ferns, scalloped motifs, and daisy-like flowers frame the birds and the mountains, and tucked in between are branches of cherry blossoms. Ricrac designs, tiny scalloped lines, and basketweave-style detailing define the handles.

A hard-to-find piece in this pattern, this plate has traveled the century with some adventure marks to prove it. There is a small 1/4" inch chip on the bottom right at the rim, and two series of tiny chips on the back of the plate at the rim of the handles. All of these chips were most likely caused by a plate hanger. Fortunately, none of these small flaws can be seen from the front of the plate.

So pretty for both an art piece and a practical serving piece, this size plate is especially great for serving brownies, homemade chocolates, and mini cakes. It’s also a lovely representative of living up to the movement’s mission “art for art’s sake.” Eventually replaced by the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century, the Artistic Movement lasted for 40 years from 1860-1900. The pottery of Henry Alcock operated from 1861 to 1935.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

Made during the Aesthetic movement

Kenilworth pattern

Colors include chocolate brown and ivory

Stamped on back with maker's mark, impressed date codes, and patent date

Hard-to-find piece in pattern

{CONDITION}

In lovely antique condition, this plate contains no cracks or stains.
