Cities are known for the hotels they keep.... (from Hotel Hayes initial 1920s era business proposal)

{HISTORY}

In operation from 1926-1975, Hotel Hayes was known as one of the fanciest overnight lodging establishments in the state of Michigan. Located in Jackson, a city known for its car manufacturing plants and corset factories during the early part of the 20th century, the hotel acted as a glamorous hotspot for out-of-town visitors. Offering 200 rooms and numerous restaurants including a gambling room, a coffee shop, and three restaurants, the hotel also offered meeting spaces and party venues to local residents looking to celebrate in a swanky atmosphere.

Made by Jackson China in Falls Creek PA, the hotel's dishware featured deep pink rims with a center grey fan and ribbon design that hints at the hotel's extravagant style and flamboyant 1920s art deco glamour. This soup cup was made for the hotel in February of 1961, just three years before the Hayes would be sold to a group of local business leaders. Tragically, the hotel, expensive to operate and maintain, even though creative attempts like offering office space to local businesses and apartments for rent caused it to close in the mid-1970s.

Now, this soup cup acts as a relic to the vanishing old independent hotels of America. Well-known guests to the hotel included Eleanor Roosevelt, Art Linkletter, and Richard Nixon among a host of figures throughout history who made a stopover at Hotel Hayes during its 50-year run. That makes this cup both a functional serving bowl and a unique storyteller. The best part of collecting vintage restaurant ware is imagining all the scenes and situations in which the dishes moved around their dining rooms.
