Families readily adopt Syracuse China as an heirloom of value, taking pride in its years in the family and its passage to the next in line... (from a Daily Mail newspaper advertisement published on December 13th, 1940)

{HISTORY}

Vintage yet very modern too, these beautiful 1940s-era salad plates were made by Syracuse China in 1948. Although Syracuse might be most famous for its restaurant ware, it also did a bustling domestic business outfitting kitchens across the country with an array of pretty patterns and functional dinnerware sets.

These two salad plates were made for the home market and feature vibrant shades of - cranberry red and celadon green. Delicate floral line drawings fill each plate edge to edge and scallops along the rim highlight each corner.

Originally, these two came in a salad plate set of four - with two other colors filling out the collection - a buttery golden yellow and a sky blue shade. Nowadays this pattern is very hard to find, so unfortunately, we can't offer any more specific details about this pattern or the designer at the moment, but we'll keep looking for more info.  I

Interestingly, in the 1940s, Syracuse was experimenting with both square shapes and multi-colored sets, so these two were part of the fun of creatively thinking outside of the box, or in this case, the dish.

As far as practicality and everyday use go, square-shaped dishes are such great servers. In addition to salads, we love these two best for snack time and hor-d'oeuvre hour. A bit fancier than your traditional round dish or platter, it's a great shape for serving cheese and crackers, fruit, antipasto, charcuterie, tea sandwiches, and an array of desserts.  These two would be especially pretty for the holiday table if you fancy non-traditional Christmas imagery yet love the traditional holiday color palette.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

In beautiful vintage condition, these plates contain no chips, cracks, spots, or staining. The floral line drawings on the green plate are lighter in clarity as opposed to the red plate which is much more detailed. It isn't faded, it's just the way the design came out during the manufacturing process. Please see photos.
