Long-time magazine editor and cookbook author Florence Brobeck (1895-1979) was always on the lookout for an interesting twist when she was writing about food or looking to compile a recipe collection. She knew how to capture a reader's attention with a zippy title and then charm them with educational tips about the history of a specific food or two.  Throw in some interesting recipes to match and Florence had a devoted fan base.   Here, in Old-Time Pickling and Spicing, she works her magic in the very same way.

At first glance, you might think this book is most appropriate for the farmer or the country house liver with crops and gardens and plenty of room to grow ample food to cook and preserve. But don't be fooled. This book is actually meant for city dwellers, small space-livers, weekend cooks and busy moms who are short on time and agricultural square footage but big on the idea of enjoying homemade preserved foods.

As Florence is apt to point out right away, the recipes in this cookbook are old-fashioned classics paired with modern-day ingenuity and interest. Here,  she's modified recipes for small quantities and quick preparation that provides a wealth of flavor but a limited amount of time to prepare. Since it was first published in 1953, it has become a beloved recipe book still lauded by home cooks today.

{CONDITION}

 In lovely vintage condition. The dust jacket bears scuff marks, as expected with a 70-year-old cookbook, as well as one chippy spot along the edge on the front cover. The interior is very clean and bright. A previous marked many recipes that were good ones with a check mark and an occasional note of a tweaked ingredient or two. The spine is tight and all pages are intact.
