Originally a maker of pharmaceutical bottles beginning in the 1800's, Wheaton branched out in the early 1900's to the home canning industry who was struggling to keep preserved food fresh while also not tasting metallic ( a problem that occurred with tin-type vessels). The innovation of a threaded rim on glass jars made way for the revolutionary Mason Jar that home canners have depended on for over a century now. But just before that invention, the next best thing to secure closure was this metal hinge style glass jar that locked the lid down tight against a self-sealing rubber ring.

Most likely this jar dates to the early 1920's with its lightening style top and hard to find shape. In the 1970's, Wheaton recreated their original old-time bottles as part of a company commemoration celebration, which made this style jar popular again and reminded people that pretty farm-fresh foods can come in equally pretty packaging. The collectors market hasn't faltered since, making these little workers still highly sought after today.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

- Working hinge closure

- Original rubber seal

- Three separate pieces are easy to clean

- Marked on bottom: WHEATON 24 U.S.A

{CONDITION}

- In great vintage kitchen with no cracks or chips on the glass container or glass lid. In operation from 1916 to 1957, Clinchfield Pottery based in Erwin, Tennessee was a favorite everyday dish manufacturer among American households during the early part of the 20th century. Prized for both their hand-painted and decorative transferware patterns, Clinchfield dishes are a challenge to find now because so many pieces were so heavily used on a daily basis that most were eventually discarded due to wear and tear or breakage. Pieces that have survived into our new century are now highly prized and collected by china aficionados around the world.

Initially trained by Ohio craftsmen who taught simple yet pretty hand-painting designs, and easy to apply transferware techniques to the new unskilled workers at Clinchfield, this serving bowl contains both a transferware medallion and hand-painting around the rim and inner bowl. Boasting a pretty shade of cantaloupe, the rim is glazed with a lustreware finish which produces a subtle iridescent glow when held up to the light. Evidence of an artist-in-training can be seen in the slightly offset center medallion, and a slight bit of painting outside the lines on the inner rim of the bowl.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

- Rare American Clinchfield pottery

- Colors include tomato red, celery green, butter yellow, pale grayish blue, black and cantaloupe

- Lustreware finish

- Wonderful aged patina with crazing and age spots

- Marked on bottom with the Clinchfield S.P.I. With the option of having all ingredients available, all the time, under one roof (thus eliminating the idea of having to stop at the bakery and then the fish monger and then the butcher, etc,) the time saved shopping made home cooking all the more exciting and manageable. An immigrant to America, Adolph first began designing and hand-carving wooden reliefs for fireplace mantels and various artistic interior decor pieces. His work quickly became quite popular prompting him to come up with faster, easier ways to produce pieces that still retained a highly stylized level of quality and design. That led to a wood pulp version later called Syroco wood which worked well with hand-carved molds and in turn eventually led to a plastic mold version from which our lovely bird came to life.

Originally part of a four-piece series that included another bird, and two other sets of tree branches, our lovely lady now flies solo at ease with her own independence.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

- Gorgeous antiquated gold color

- Highly detailed flowers and feathers

- Stamped on the back with the year, 1967, and the maker's mark

- Comes ready to hang

{CONDITION}

Strong and sturdy condition with no cracks.

{SIZE}

Measures 14" inches (length) x 9" inches (width) x .5" inch (depth)

{STYLE IDEA}

This lady adds a touch of elegance to any cooking space with her neutral color palette. History feels palpable when you run your fingers along the cracks and the crazing lines. Imaginations quickly take flight with possibilities about where it's been and what it's seen over the course of the past 75 years. How did it travel halfway around the world? By ship or plane or both? And who carried it and how? In a coat pocket as a gift for a girl back home? In a cushioned box packed close among other heirlooms marking a family on the move? And what events of history was it involved in between the time it was made in Japan in the mid-20th century to the day it was discovered in the American South in a whole new century?

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

- Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous crazing - all over!

- Handpainted floral designs

- Embossed flourishes

- Colors include (berry, turquoise, mint, black, brown, marigold and teal against natural beige background

{CONDITION}

Two tiny (pin hole size) chips along inner rim near the handle. Athos, along with his wife Sara were passionate about the natural wildlife surrounding their adopted city of Atlanta, GA. In particular they were captivated by the numerous array of colorful and exotic birds that passed through the Southern region of the U.S. Setting out to record their color and fine feather detailing in paints and drawings, Athos captured pairs of birds in their natural settings, while Sara contributed naturalist style writing about their own observations of living among the wildlife in the sub-tropical garden paradise that is Atlanta. Their words and images were compiled in a highly acclaimed book titled Menaboni's Birds in 1950 which was lauded for its exquisite detailing and brightly colored renderings of some of the American South's most beautiful birds. This plover print, salvaged from the book, captures the gorgeous free spirit and comical character that gives joy-filled personality to one of the cutest shore birds in North America.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

- Includes a complimentary array the following colors: brown, black, ivory, cantaloupe, mint, plum, beige, grey and peach.

- In addition to the handsome couple, this bookplate also includes a series of detailed oyster shells and a naturalist's description of plover characteristics on the reverse side

- Ultra crisp and clear lines

{CONDITION}

Clean and clear of spots or foxing this print is in great condition. A prestigious dynasty and a world class reputation were quickly established, making Haviland and Co. artistically superior over other Limoge based dish makers.

Passed down through generations, the Havilland brand broke into several variations as family members competed against one another for business. Johann Haviland was actually Jean Haviland, grandson of the first American Haviland's to leave New York and head across the ocean to France. Jean wanted to break away from the formality of the French factory so he moved to Germany and started his own brand capitalizing off the family name.

But Jean had no interest in producing highly decorated, ornate china patterns. His heart lay in simple designs that were moderately priced so that average Americans could enjoy beautiful pieces. He also wanted to capture the bulk quantity hotel market. Because of his price point and his interest in bulk quantities of similar styles, Jean's china pieces were not considered as luxurious nor as fine a quality as his more exquisite French Haviland relatives.

Today however, the simple designs of Johann Haviland make serving food wonderfully attractive and so effortless and easy. With specific procedures, ideal food brand recommendations, and exact ingredients, Rena made it possible for home cooks worldwide to achieve the very same results just as if they were dining in Hakafri themselves. Written in both English and Hebrew this cookbook contains over 5 dozen recipes meant to complement a wealth of cross-cultural meals.
