Take me home, country roads...

{HISTORY}

Fifteen years before John Denver released his West Virginia love song, Take Me Home, Country Roads, travelers were discovering their own reasons to adore the Mountain state. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we love West V for its gorgeous fall foliage, the historic Greenbriar Hotel and the numerous potteries that made some of the prettiest vintage dishware in the entire United States. This 1950s era vintage tin tray highlights some of the other attributes of the state too including horseracing, fly fishing and skiing. The state flower, the rhododendron, adds a splash of pretty color and the gold map highlights an array of interestingly named towns located around the state.

As more and more people began traveling around the country during the mid-20th century, a rise in collectible travel souvenir items became popular. One of those most fun ones were these 1950's tin souvenir trays depicting each and every state in the U.S.. This one even contains its original sales sticker, picked up at the Charleston West 76 truck stop in 1951 for the price of $1.98. How fun!

Appealing to jet-setters and road-trippers alike, these trays served as not only a nostalgic keepsake of a wonderful trip enjoyed, but also a useful piece of kitchenware that was both fun and functional. Each tray was rimmed in gold and black and contained an outline of the state depicting popular cities, local attractions and a colorful snippet of local flora or fauna. With such dramatic graphic appeal that offered a cohesive color scheme between each state, they made attractive wall decor when grouped together and provided a fun source of conversation while they served coffee or cocktails.
