Percolators are manufactured in glass, crockery, enamel, and aluminum, and may be purchased in various sizes. The principles of coffee making are the same in all, but the time allowed for percolation will differ according to size and type of pot used. Allow 1 tablespoon coffee per cup, place coffee in strainer, fill cavity with cold water and heat. After coffee begins to percolate, lower heat and allow water to bubble gently for 5-12 minutes or until the bubbles appear foamy through the glass top. Remove the strainer containing the coffee grounds. Over percolation produces a bitter beverage.  Directions from the Super Market Cook Book, 1955

{HISTORY}

The beginnings of the coffee percolator date all the way back to 1810 when Benjamin Thompson began tinkering around with the food choices of soldiers in the Bavarian Army. He was the one to realize the effect that coffee offered in perking men up and devised a rudimentary transportable coffee pot. Fast forward throughout the 19th century and a Frenchmen, an American and eventually an Illinois farmer all made improvements to the original coffee percolator design that we are familiar with today.

This vintage aluminum Comet coffee percolator was made during the 1960's. It is still very much functional - a great item to have on hand in the kitchen should the power go out (no electrical cords needed!) or if you are camping or picnicking outdoors. Just add hot water!
