First published in 1919, True Story was one of the first confessional-style magazines to appear on the American publishing market. Offering readers sensational real-life stories surrounding women's issues related to relationships, home, work and family, it evolved over the 20th century as women's roles changed, ultimately ending up in the teen romance category where it is still published today.

{HISTORY}

Fascinating on several fronts, this September 1945 issue of True Story magazine is a veritable time capsule of pop culture. Published by MacFadden Publishing Company which was founded by Bernarr MacFadden who was a controversial 20th-century healthy lifestyle zealot, the magazine was based on everyday real-life situations that occurred in women's lives. Labeled a confessional-style publication, it had a pulp fiction tone to it, which varied from the more noble literary fiction stories published in other women's magazines of the day. This editorial style found its market quickly and by the 1920's it became one of the country's most popular magazines.

WWII ended in September 1945. This September issue went to press before the war was over, so it is full of references, ads, imagery, and editorial relating to the war effort. With a tone geared toward youthful women who were waiting on their guys to come back home from the front, it is full of stories focused on real-life relationships, daring adventures, and the undeniable strength and emotional endurance of women during these trying years. There is also lots of discussion mixed in between all that heady romance and cheerful bravado on how to keep your hair shiny, your makeup flawless and your wartime ration recipes innovative. It's a fascinating glimpse into the mindsets of wartime women and how they were encouraged to keep a positive attitude and a brave smile while they waited on loved ones to return home.
