{HISTORY}

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) is one of the best known female poets in the entire English language. Born in England in 1806 she was a prolific writer throughout her life, especially during her courtship and marriage to fellow poet Robert Browning. Despite ill health and a dependence on laudanum, Elizabeth wrote insightful, sensitive poetry highlighting the vulnerabilities of love and emotional attachment.  Still resonating with readers to this day, her sonnets are often recited during wedding ceremonies and reception toasts around the world.
