{HISTORY}

This vintage set of six restaurant ware salad plates was made in the 1980s by Shenango -  one of the country's leading 20th-century manufacturers of dishware for the hospitality industry.

Featuring the now hard-to-find Peppercorn pattern, a red and white laurel leaf style design, these are deep dish salad plates that could have held a variety of foods from extra spaghetti sauce to side dishes to soupy desserts like berry buckle or cobbler.

With vintage restaurant ware, it is always fun to imagine where dishes like this wound up as far as eating establishments. The Peppercorn pattern was not made for any specific restaurant, so this batch could have been involved with a roadside dinner or a luncheonette, a city cafe or a country cookhouse. That's the joy of dreaming about dishes and whom they might have served and where.

Made in the early 1980s after Shennago had been sold to Anchor Hocking, these dishes retain the shenango back \stamp but also the Anchor Hocking mark. Unfortunately, just a handful of years after they were made production of Shenango dishware stopped completely and the plant was closed in 1989. That makes this set a bittersweet reminder of a vital American company that beautified the dining industry for over 100 years.

Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we absolutely love red and white transferware collections for use during the holiday season. Load these plates up with your savory cranberry walnut salad, your pretty pomegranate studded oatmeal, your warm wine-soaked cheese dip and delight the diners in your life with a pretty dish full of something delicious.
