{HISTORY}

The oldest train line in America and a leader in luxury transportation and fine dining, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (aka B & O) service was exemplary from start to finish. This vintage restaurant ware dish proudly utilized in the rain's dining car between the 1920s and 1930s, it features the B & O Capitol Dome logo designed by Otto Kuhler a well-known industrial artist of the early to mid-20th century.

This Capitol pattern, named for its route in and out of Washington DC, featured a sophisticated gold and black design against an ivory body. The epitome of refined elegance just like the train line and travelers it served, the Capitol pattern came in a complete line of dining car serving dishes from plates to platters and everything in between.

Manufactured both by Shenango (1920s) and Warwick China (1930s), the maker of this specific dish is unknown as it is unmarked on the bottom. Hard to find these days, this dish might have originally started out as a bouillon cup, but nowadays thanks to its size and shape, we think here in the Vintage Kitchen, it is just perfect for serving olives or nuts or dried fruit during cocktail hour.  What a fun conversation starter it would be! A delightful dose of romantic vintage train travel with your drink.

Lovely for the holiday season, the color palette of this dish pairs perfectly with golden ornaments, black champagne bottles and all the cheer (and caviar) you can muster.

Photos included feature Otto and also a 1937 photograph of  B & O's Capitol train.
