A home is not a museum. It doesn't have to be furnished with Picasso paintings, or Sheraton suites, or Oriental rugs, or Chinese pottery. But it does have to be furnished with things that mean something to you. James M. Cain, Mildred Pierce, 1941

{HISTORY}

James M. Cain got it right when he penned those words about the importance of filling your space with meaningful objects. It's only when you follow this type of decorating that your home truly takes on a personality all its own. That's when a magocal environment is created with stories that pour out right and left from every detail, every nook and cranny, every room.

In the kitchen, there's no better storyteller than a vintage platter, and a vintage restaurant ware platter in particular. They've been involved in a million meals, in a million people's lives, in a million ways as busy servers in a hustle-bustle environment. Many pieces have brands or marks that tell where they are from or who they served, but not all. And sometimes knowing nothing about their particulars is even better than knowing something. That's when you can let your imagination take over and pick and choose some of your own creative adventures that such a dish may have been involved with.

Such is the case with this platter here. Made by Syracuse China in 1978, it is unadorned as to logo or flourish, so the possibilities are endless as to where this classic beauty may have lived and worked. It could have been part of the serving crew in a fancy hotel in a big city or a swanky social club in the country. It could have been part of the dishware set of a large commercial enterprise like a hospital cafeteria or a prep school canteen or something smaller and more intimate like a cozy roadside cafe or a popular neighborhood bakery. That's the special joy of this timeless dish. It may look simple and uncomplicated but it's actually full of hidden stories.
