When you take a look at this elegant pattern from Mikasa you'll wonder how something so delicate looking, could be so practical too... (from a 1979 advertisement for Mikasa's Royalty pattern)

{HISTORY}

Full of tender beauty, this pair of vintage soup bowls was made by Mikasa between 1979 and 1982. Known as the Royalty pattern, each bowl features a single dainty flower sprig reminiscent of antique botanical illustrations in the center and a beautiful basketweave design around the rim. Washed in a pale beige, these dishes feature the colors of new life often seen in the spring season - garlic, olive, verdant green, moss green, and buttery yellow.

When you pair a color combination like this together, a whole host of foods make ideal companions. Split pea soup, slow-simmered lentils, spinach salad, french onion soup,  potato bisque, lamb stew, chicken cassoulet. It's a feast for the eyes and the belly all at once.

Made in Japan, these dishes represent the wonderful care and quality that Mikasa represents with each of their dish patterns. The raised basketweave detailing around the shoulder of each bowl is a wonderful example of refined artistry. Look closely and you'll notice detail upon detail... the shadows of the basket weave, the gently curved lines, the olive stripe around the gently scalloped rim, and dots of flowers all working together to create a picnic basket effect fit for the prettiest of garden parties.

Setting beautiful tables since the mid-20th century, Mikasa was founded by California-born, George Aratani (1917-2013) in the 1950s as an importer of Japanese dishware to America. Known for its fashionable designs, suburb quality, and convenient sales shops located within stores like Macy's and Bloomingdales, Mikasa dishware quickly built a reputation for bringing elegant designs to the table in celebration of everyday meals.  Still going strong today, Mikasa still enchants dishware collectors with their unique aesthetic and stylish pieces.
