{HISTORY}

Made in England by Ridgway in the 1950s, this vintage soup bowl features the Woodland pattern - a beautiful hand-painted pastoral scene of a lush English landscape with a stream close by and a castle in the far-off distance. Encircling this setting is a ring of flowers around the shoulder and shield-like emblems wrapping around the rim.

A lone soup bowl can be such a thing of wonder. Oftentimes, bowls are escorted around the kitchen in matching assembly, and when there is four or six of eight of something all alike it can be difficult to take notice of each individual one. But in the case of this lone soup bowl,  we really get a chance to admire all the details that make up this very handsome pattern.

Let's look...

At the center there's a castle as pink as a squished cranberry. Dabs of marigold and emerald green mark the trees and the bushes, and a blueberry colored stream winds its way through the center. Around the shoulder, flowers bloom in colors of merlot and chocolate, taupe and pale pink, before mirroring the same shades of blueberry, marigold and emerald in the landscape. Hues of chocolate brown repeat along the edge in the form of stripes and outlines on the shield-like emblems that hug the rim tightly like a necklace or a lace collar.

All this detail makes this bowl not only a mini work of art, but also a lovely conversation piece. At holiday time, thanks to its autumn color palette, it's an ideal server for cocktail snacks like nuts, olives or dried fruit. And it is effortlessly pretty as a countertop collection bowl for mini fruits of the season like pears, pomegranates, or apples.  If there was three or five or seven more of these guys, they'd probably perform their traditional task of soup servers, but one lone bowl gives you the chance to think outside the box and stretch your styling creativity. Whichever way you choose to incorporate it, one thing is for certain, it will bring a bit of beautiful England home to you and your beautiful home.
