Oh if I could live but another century, and see the fruition of all the work for women! There is still so much to be done. Susan. B. Anthony

{HISTORY}

Here she is! Susan by Homer Laughlin circa 1948. It's always fun when a pottery company gives a pattern design a human name. It begs one's imagination to wonder if the pattern was named after a specific person or just described an admired moniker. Was it the name of the dishware designer's little girl? Or was it the name of their great love - an adult Susan - the gal with the wonderfully sunny disposition and the magnetic spirit to match? Was it a Homer Laughlin ancestor? A grandmother or great aunt perhaps? Or maybe this pattern was named for a famous Susan in history like Susan B Anthony or Susan Wood Crocker.  In the 1940s, the name Susan was the 10th most popular girl's name, falling just after the popular "s" names of Sandra and Sharon.

In the land of Homer Laughlin, Susan was a pretty dish pattern consisting of buttercup yellow flowers, blue forget-me-nots, and swatches of silver, green and rust-colored leaves. Designed for their Republic dish shape, a dishware style that was first designed in the early years of 1900, Republic contained a scalloped edge, rimmed with gold and embossed detailing. Cheerful, glamorous, and elegant, the combo of Susan and Republic is a beauty to behold, and sure to add a bit of sunshine to any table display. This set of matching bread and butter dishes coordinates well with solid colors and also a bevy of mix and match florals for a festive (and beautiful!) dining experience.
